The Margaret River Chocolate Company is promoting the significant health benefits of cocoa with the introduction of two new products to its award-winning range - a 70% dark chocolate and super-premium European cocoa powder.
Recent research at Cornell University in the USA has labeled hot cocoa as a "super drink" due to its high level of antioxidants that prevent cancer. In fact, cocoa has nearly twice the antioxidants of red wine and up to three times those found in green tea.
The research concluded that the reason cocoa is better than drinks like red wine is due to its high content of compounds called phenolic phytochemicals, or flavonoids, which indicate the presence of known antioxidants that can stave off cancer, heart disease and other ailments.
The research also showed that cocoa has only about one-third of a gram of fat per serve.
International research is continually highlighting the benefits of dark chocolate and cocoa powder and The Margaret River Chocolate Company has spent the last six months researching the best cocoa-based ingredients available for its new range.
The company's new 73% dark chocolate is being sourced exclusively from Ghana in West Africa and is guaranteed to contain a minimum of 73% cocoa solids, which are extremely high in antioxidants.
Its new premium blend cocoa powder from Europe is recognised as one of the world's best and is perfect for cooking, decorating or as a winter, warming hot chocolate drink.
The Margaret River Chocolate Company's spokesman Martin Black said the company had done extensive research to source its new 73% dark chocolate and cocoa powder as it did not want to sacrifice taste for health benefits.
He said the dark chocolate was still extremely smooth and easy to eat, despite its very high cocoa content.
"The 73% dark chocolate combines the subtle fruitiness and richly varied aromas of high cocoa dark chocolate, but with a hint of vanilla and a very smooth mouth feel," Mr Black said.
"The cocoa powder is super-premium European cocoa as opposed to the pre-packaged cocoa mixes often sold in supermarkets that can be loaded with sugar and additives."
The new dark chocolate and cocoa products are available at both of The Margaret River Chocolate Company's factories in Margaret River and the Swan Valley.
